Transverse plane deformity of the lesser metatarsal phalangeal joints is commonly seen and treated, yet often a full understanding of the pathology is not appreciated. This presentation reviews the history of treatment, current concepts in the understanding of the pathomechanics causing the pathology, as well as treatment options from conservative to surgical. A detailed description of the surgical approach is presented as well as possible complications.

In this lecture, Dr. Marc Benard of the Baja Crippled Children Project reviews the overall parameters for the recognition of the deformity, its clinical and radiographic appearance and the variables associated with its non-surgical and surgical management.
