In this lecture, Laura F. Jacobs, MD, PhD introduces the concept of Pneumatic Medicine, fitting it into the larger context of Vascular Medicine. A brief review of Peripheral Vascular Disorders (PVDs), including arterial, venous, and lymphatic disorders is presented. The key concept addressed in her lecture is how clinicians can fully incorporate Vascular Medicine into their clinical practices by integrating Pneumatic Medicine into their treatment protocols. Correct diagnosis and treatments of PVDs are discussed, including the signs and symptoms of PVDs, specific disorders that may be diagnosed, and comorbidities. The industry's classic treatments for PVDs are reviewed, focusing specifically on treatments for chronic wounds, including a review of different types of static pressure. A comprehensive analysis of how Pneumatic Medicine, which uses dynamic compression instead of static pressure, can be used to treat PVDs is presented. Examples of case studies in which Pneumatic Medicine has been successful in treating PVDs demonstrate the efficacy of this approach.
