I’ve been pleasantly busy acclimatizing myself to the
practice environment. The other day my wife and I reviewed our
expenses, including those we incurred during the job search process
and the move to Lansing, Michigan to start practice. We knew we had
spent quite a lot of money during the past year but were surprised
by just how much! Below I’m presenting you with a list of my job
search expenses in the hope you start now (whatever year you’re in)
saving for the job search and relocation process. Expenses and fees
you will incur if you enter into private practice vary depending on
your location and circumstances. If you enter practice as an
associate your employer should pay for them.
Personal Expenses |
Cost |
Job
interviews and visit expenses |
$3500 |
New
housing expenses (rent, deposit, etc) |
$1000 |
Moving
van and gas |
$400 |
Utility turn-on |
$100 |
TOTAL |
$5000 |
Some additional expenses incurred if starting
your own practice:
- Hospital credentialing fees
- Liability insurance
- Association fees (MPMA, APMA, ACFAS)
- State licensure
- Disability Insurance
- Set-up costs for new practice (Office
space, staff, insurance, advertising, etc)
I encourage all of you
to write in with your thoughts. If you’re interested in a particular
topic feel free to write me.
I also invite any young practitioners
who receive this to write in with your experiences. Experience is
a most valuable professor.
I look forward to hearing
from you and engaging in some interesting discussion.
