Election 2008 & The DPMs. WOW!
Great work and thanks for the over 100 responders to the PRESENT RI Poll from last week. The data proved quite interesting and we have summarized all of it below for you and provided the full numbers. You can read much into the response. Some of the question responses were predictable, but I was quite surprised with many others.

I thought some of the more interesting results were in the top section. An overwhelming 'WIN' for the patient was predicted with Obama, while most of you felt that McCain would be better for the system from the physician point of view:

Which candidate will be better for US healthcare from the perspective of teh patient

Over 90% of you were in favor of healthcare reform, but that number dropped to 52% when I added the word ‘Major’:

Are you in favor of healthcare 'reform'?

Are you in favor of Major healthcare 'reform'?

The vote prediction section was a lot of fun. I emailed this out to all the listed subjects and have posted a few of their comments at the conclusion of this article. I think the most interesting line is that a clear majority of you predict that your residency program director will vote for McCain on election day:

Wow...There is definitely wisdom in crowds.

I would suggest writing in for a Kalish-Sherman ticket. Strong on national defense and on family values, whilst not forgetting about progressive podo-centric policies for change. Kalish - Sherman, 2008.

Cheers,

How interesting that the PRESENT political poll shows that this highly targeted group of foot doctors so closely mirrors the entire country in being split almost evenly (46.5/53.5) between Obama and McCain.  The world has become quite a complex place at the dawn of the 21st century and even with the great information conduit of the Internet bringing so much information to our fingertips, the average American still feels so alienated from the political process.  In the last presidential election, less than 50% of eligible voters voted! College students that have so much future ahead of them virtually stayed home.

Though 101 members of the PRESENT podiatric education community peg me narrowly (52.2%) as a McCain supporter, I am 100% for Obama, and here is why.  I am embarrassed that 50 million Americans only get emergency medical care in hospital ERs because they have no health insurance.  This is bad policy in many ways, not the least of which is that it ends up costing us more to deliver this emergency only care.  I read Obama's book The Audacity of Hope to learn more about the guy, and have come to believe that he is highly intelligent and a great strategic thinker, not unlike Bill Clinton in values and talents. After 8 years of enduring George Bush, I'm ready to have someone who can digest the massive information available to him and make some better decisions for us.

In traveling around the world, I have learned that people still admire Americans but hate our government and the corporate greed behind it.  I agree...and believe that we should use the electoral process wisely made available to us by the founding fathers to elect a government that we will be proud of.

I'm probably the least known doctor on the list and surprisingly, the PRESENT readers were able to discern my voting preference in this year's election correctly.  I tend to have liberal social views and conservative fiscal views.  I don't think either candidate intends a major overhaul of the US healthcare system.  But, there are stark differences in what each candidate's proposed tax plan would cost me.  After using an internet McCain/Obama tax calculator, I found that Obama would collect $12,000 more per year in taxes from me and my wife.  Wisely, my dad once told me that when you're young and have no money - you're a Democrat; when you're productive, working hard, and making money - you're a Republican; then when you retire and rely on social security - you become a Democrat again.
