t's that time of year again. Here in Central Oregon, the landscape is becoming green again, the farmers are planting, and my wife is starting her yearly garden while the weather here slowly becomes warmer. It's spring cleaning time! What better time to clean the cobwebs out of both our homes and our minds? Even the most organized of us can get behind after months of busy practices, surgery, and family obligations. In a way, spring is the opportunity to act on some of those New Year's resolutions we've been putting off. According to ProactiveChange.com 40-45% of Americans make New Year's resolutions, but only 46% of these resolutions are maintained after 6 months. That means ½ of us make a resolution and about ½ of those actually keep them. Spring cleaning time is that chance to renew our resolutions and reorganize for the rest of the year.

I have managed to become pretty disorganized in the last nine months. Since moving to Oregon, starting a new practice, getting established in the community, and spending time with my family, I've managed to let much of my organization go. I am going to take advantage of the warmer weather, sunshine, and general good feeling to complete one of my New Year's resolutions: get organized. Here's my plan:
Home: My wife and I have already begun systematically going through the house room by room and ridding ourselves of clothes, toys (my son's of course), and other objects we no longer need. Our garage has turned into a storage facility since our most recent move. We're putting unused and unneeded objects aside to donate to our local Goodwill. My home office has already been organized/downsized to a manageable level. We have also begun reviewing our personal finances, updating insurance policies and collecting our personal documents for easier access.
Office: I plan to sift through my desk and shelves at the office to better organize files and contacts. Additionally, I've been pulling various business reports to update myself on the progress of my practice in Central Oregon.
Personal: I'm cleaning the cobwebs out of my head as well. First, I'm going through all of those journals and magazines I've put aside, meaning to read. It is remarkably easy to cease the daily studies I did during residency. Time to review! I've scheduled myself for an upcoming conference to keep my knowledge current. |
It's a basic plan, I know, but if I manage to accomplish the majority of my goals I'll be better organized and mentally ready for the rest of the year. Remember, as McDonald's founder Ray Crock said, if you're green you're growing, if you're ripe you rot! Best wishes on your spring cleaning.

Great start on what you are doing. As Chairman of the Dept of Podiatry at St. Joseph hospital in Milwaukee for 4, years I sat on the Medical Executive committee. That is where the real action is!!. All the Dept. heads, Chief of Staff, hospital administrator, nursing supervisor, etc. Go for that one someday if you can.
Regards,
—Dr. Louis R. Lapow
I'm also a new practitioner. It's interesting that I’m doing the same thing as you in term of getting on committees. It’s such a great way for marketing and to get to know and to earn the respect of the medical community.
I worked my way up to be committee chair for both Infection Control and Pharmacy and Therapeutics. I really enjoy it.

You are absolutely right. The committee members will in fact “advertise” you as to who you are and what you do and it will not cost you a cent!
Outside my committee work, I am also a member of Rotary. A few presentations about foot health etc it is amazing what it can do for you.
Cheers!
