Dr. Al Kline on Open Source
In a recent eTalk thread on PRESENT Podiatry’s interactive website, Dr. Al Kline, publisher/Editor The Foot and Ankle Online Journal, and technical editor of The Journal of Diabetic Foot Complications, described an excellent resource called Podiatry Internet Communications,—a consolidated effort to bring clinicians the latest news and open source or open access articles in the field of podiatry and foot & ankle orthopaedics. Dr. Kline states: “it is my hope that we can utilize the site as a clearing house for these types of links and articles.” Indeed, in December the Foot and Ankle Online Journal will present a new front page that Dr. Kline says will also highlight recent open access articles from various open access journals available on the Internet.
What are open source journals, you say?
Simply put, open source or open access journals are those journals that require no subscription to and are available for free to the user. Commonly, these journals are available online, and often allow you to register your email address to be sent notifications when new electronic issues of the journal are available. Follow this link to a recent Residency Insight on the topic of open source journals.
In addition to these exciting changes on the Foot and Ankle Online Journal in the field of expanded open source coverage, the website will now also feature an opportunity for members of the podiatry community to publish information vital to our field, be it new or upcoming studies, grants, and specialty specific news.
According to Dr. Kline: “I wanted to expand our site to include additional information, open access articles from other publications and other sources aside from our newly published articles that come out monthly.” Toward that end, Dr. Kline is encouraging all members of the podiatric community to forward links to interesting news and open source journal articles that can then be included on the websites; please see below Dr. Kline’s eTalk posting for more details!
Dr. Kline’s eTalk Post:
I would like to extend an invitation to all podiatrist who are interested to submit links to these type of articles that are available on the internet without having the subscribe of pay for them. Many of us surf the net for interesting information and topics and very often will find an article that is free and available. We would like to publish and highlight those type of articles through PICOMM and make this available to all of us.
To see the type of articles and information available that we would like to present, go to the PICOMM website and check out the current issue. I've already found three interesting articles that I will present through the site for December. If you find an article, you can email me directly with the link and information at [email protected] and I'll post the article through PICOMM monthly.

Al Kline, DPM
