Dr. Vanore details the pathology and treatment alternatives of plantar heel pain. The pathology and etiology is reviewed. Although the vast majority of patients present with biomechanically induced heel pain, the etiology may be quite varied including neurologic, arthritic, and traumatic pathologies. Treatment should initially be non-surgical and a stepwise progression is recommended. Several new developments are discussed including extracorporal shockwave and minimally invasive surgical approaches. The presentation is based upon his 20 years of clinical practice and his experience as Chairman of the ACFAS Heel Pain CPG Committee.
