With a new year comes new opportunities, and it is no surprise that it is during these times of transition that many of us establish new years resolutions this is our opportunity to start with a clean slate in 2011. Often our resolutions are based upon our perception of our failures during the previous year. Perhaps failure is too strong a word — but at its root, a resolution is an acknowledgement of a wish to grow and develop into the person you want to be.

“New Year resolution: is a commitment that an individual makes to a personal goal, project, or the reforming of a habit. This lifestyle change is generally interpreted as advantageous. A New Years Resolution is generally a goal someone sets out to accomplish in the coming year.”

While many individuals make New Years resolutions, many of us have come to regard these resolutions as synonymous with failed expectations. Did you accomplish your resolution in 2010? Recent research shows that while 52% of participants in a resolution study were confident of success with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals. A separate study in 2007 by Richard Wisemen from the University of Bristol showed that 78% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, and those who succeed have 5 traits in common:1

Those who succeed have 5 traits in common:1

Studies have demonstrated that individuals achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, especially when this goal system utilized a series of small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying "lose weight."2

What goals have you set for 2011? Each of us will have different answers for this question. Some will be searching for a new job in 2011; others will be working to survive that difficult residency rotation. Regardless of the tasks that sit before us, we can utilize these effective strategies to make 2011 a year of accomplishment!
