Dr Bakotic describes the broad spectrum of neoplastic and non-neoplastic skin lesions that should be considered in the differential diagnosis when assessing a "pigmented lesion" of the skin. In addition, he elaborates on the current status of the traditional melanoma classification system and provides insight into the highly variable clinical appearance of melanoma. He concludes by summarizing the indications for cutaneous biopsy and noting the biopsy technique of choice.
