The management of DFUs is not a "one and done" decision; it requires clinicians to change the treatment plan as the wound trajectory progresses to meet the assessed needs. Wound bed preparation, support of comorbid and co-existing conditions and topical treatments based on an ongoing wound assessment is paramount to success. Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) meets many of the ongoing needs and mechanically powered (MP)NPWT adds the additional benefit of enhancing the quality of life for the outpatient integrating wound care and wound healing into their ambulatory lifestyle. Case examples utilizing combination therapies in outpatient clinics will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the role that NPWT plays in wound bed preparation.
- Differentiate MPNPWT and its role in the ambulatory population of patients.
- Discuss the role of collagen in continuing the healing process begun by NPWT.
- Review DFU cases across the care continuum to demonstrate enhance wound healing.
